Four APV strains have recently been isolated from a group of Canadian geese capture in Minnesota. Preliminary data suggest that one of these is only mildly pathogenic to susceptible turkeys while confering a strong and protective immune response. Because the APV strains responsible for the disease in the U.S. all have significant homogeneity in surface antigenic genes, it is thought that an effective vaccine capable of providing protective immunity to commercial turkeys might be developed from this goose derived strain.
